U.C. Berkeley Tiny Home at SMUD Competition in Sacramento  Tiny House in My Backyard is an interdisciplinary group of undergraduate and graduate students that worked together to design and build affordable, off-grid, 100% solar-powered tiny houses. Sabrina Werts, an English/Public Health Major and Public Policy Minor, took on the role as the Communications Director for the project. The planning phase of the project started 2 years ago, the team reached out to many businesses for sponsors, including Pella Doors and windows of Northern California in the process. The team was victorious in the SMUD 2016 Tiny House Competition in Sacramento, taking 2 nd place overall in the competition and winning individual awards for water conservation, sustainability, craftsmanship and home life. Pella Doors and Windows of Northern California is the Pella distribution center for Northern California and Northern Nevada. The branch has been owned by Dave Adamis and Jon Koski for over five years and both have a long history with Pella and the construction industry. Adamis is a Habitat supporter and has been involved with the charitable organization for many years. He said that Habitat’s values align with his own and Pella’s. “We work with Habitat because they are good to communities,” said Adamis. “It’s an organization that gets people back on their feet and the future homeowner works on the project, with us, every step of the way.” Jason Marlar is the local Pella sales representative in the North Bay that works closely with Habitat for Humanity of Sonoma.
